Your legs as the title says, includes 5 of the 10 largest muscles in the body.

In fact 3 out of the top 5 largest muscles in the body are in the legs.

It’s insanity to think that so many people discard their legs and opt for the appearance/vanity based upper body exercises.

Most will happily work a tiny muscle in the bicep for an entire session rather than do a single leg exercise all week.

We need to stop thinking about legs as a boring but necessary part of our workouts. Our legs give us an easy route to bulking, fat loss, positive weight gain and increased testosterone.

What are the largest muscles in the legs?

The largest muscles in the legs are:

  • Glutes – gluteus maximus
  • Quads – Quadriceps
  • Hip – Iliopsoas
  • Hamstrings – Biceps femoris
  • Inner thigh – Sartorius

Glutes – gluteus maximus

The largest muscle in the body, but scarily small for most people. Because we’re sitting on this muscle for hours upon hours each day, the glutes have atrophied for most of us. Work and focus on your glutes for even a single month and you’ll see the difference. It highlights how little we use this muscle, that regardless of the level your at fitness wise, you’ll receive “beginner gains” from glute workouts. If you want advice on how to train your glutes watch any female workout video, women are so far ahead of men when it comes to leg workouts.

Quads – Quadriceps

Perhaps the most powerful muscle in the body, your quads are essential for sprints, squats, jumping, pushing and pulling. All major compound movements that the quads are at the centre of. Having large quads is a showpiece feature for any bodybuilding or fitness enthusiast. Having large quads is less of an issue, however there are still millions of men who overlook them for pecs or bicep workouts.

Hip – Iliopsoas

I bet you didn’t think hips would be on this list? Science has found that the difference between top level sprinters and a middle of the road sprinter is hip flexibility and hip muscle size. I would say 90% of the world’s population have tight hips.

Hamstrings – Biceps femoris

Another gigantic muscle found in the legs that is essential for nearly every leg exercise you can think of in the gym. The issue with hamstrings is that most people are worried about what their legs look like from the front and ignore the back, like a haircut.

Inner thigh – Sartorius

Back to the thigh region once again, partnering the quads, is another one of the largest muscles in the body. Too many of us will train legs without regular variations such as foot positioning and directional changes such as backwards lunges or turning your feet inwards on the leg press. Doing these variations will attack far more areas and increase muscle size in the legs.

The importance of training legs for size

For those of us looking to add muscle for the purpose of weight gain, reaching a certain landmark such as 222lbs/100kg, this should be music to our ears.

With the legs having 5 out of 10 of the biggest muscles in the body and 3 out of the top 5, you also have to think that these muscles would be the heaviest and thus best for adding more weight to the body.

Skipping leg day or even multiple leg days per week is a grade A rookie move. Not only are the largest muscles found in the legs, but the heaviest and naturally the best for burning fat and increasing testosterone.

The larger a muscle the more fat it needs to burn for energy. Also the more testosterone it will create.

It’s like having these gigantic cheat codes at the foundation of your training. I guarantee, you focus on the above 5 muscles twice as much as you are right now with your training and you’ll achieve the best physical shape you’ve ever been in with ease.

Adding muscle and burning fat will become effortless. Followed by a new you tipping the scales at an all time high in terms of weight in a good way.

So many of us are chasing the big but lean frame. Having big heavy set legs could plausibly add 10kg-15kg to your frame over a 2 year period, just think about that! Especially from an area of the body you previously regarded as a waste of time.
