Losing your hair might be one of the most concerning days in a mans life.

It’s the realisation that you will no longer feel young, look young or live forever. It’s the first moment in a young man’s life where he realises that mortality is real.

If you’re like me you probably thought why me it’s not fair. You probabaly then went and researched every male pattern article you could find.

Truth is there probably is a cure out there, it may be food, lifestyle or something else. I’m sure one day we will find it.

Right now however we’re stuck with a few options. Hair transplant, daily stress, buzz cut or shave it all off.

Hair transplants are weird, if they work great but it’s not very liberating, plus they cost quite a bit.

Daily stress is what everyone does for a couple of years combined with applying everything and anything to their hair as they hope it will grow back.

I personally lost a lot of mine within a 2 week spell during stress from telogen effluvium and stressed for years trying to find a cure. Sometimes it’s all you think about for days and it’s not healthy.

The razorblade was too soon for me but a buzz cut that gradually got shorter until I became comfortable with it seemed like a perfect option.

If you’re going bald, either crown balding, widows peak, still using the comb over, receding hairline or all over thinning, the buzz cut is your best friend, a trial period if you would before you shave it all off.

I cannot tell you how good it feels to have that shaver run over my head once it gets a little longer than it should. My hair goes from denial to 8 mile where I feel as though I hold all of the power, and it actually looks good, like really good. I started off at the lowest possible sissor cut and move to grade 6 once confidence grew. Recently I have been sporting grade 3 with 0.5 on the sides and have not looked back. Being able to not worry about my hair is the best feeling of my life.

But I like my longer hair

I get it. If you’ve had long or medium length hair all your life then this may not be what you want. Personally I always wanted a shaved head so it wasn’t much of an issue. But there will be some of you out there that are nervous to take that first step, you don’t want to lose your boyish looks as it’s a huge part of who you are.

In this post we were going to give you some haircut ideas for balding. But if we’re honest there isn’t a lot of choice.

If you asked women what they thought of a man who was losing his hair yet tried to cover it up, they would say he’s in denial and that’s not sexy.

If you asked other men what they thought of the bald/shaved head guy compared to the man with long hair and a giant crown bald patch I am sure they would say that the guy in denial is weak, even if they were 6ft 5 with giant muscles. They would even treat that guy with less respect, we’ve all seen this or experienced it.

The reality is…there are no hairstyles for balding men other than razor shaved and buzz cut. The only options are which length you choose to opt for.

Buzz cut lengths

There are not many images of guys with thinning hair so we’ve had to use guys with hair as the examples.

Grade 7 – 8 buzz cut

mens buzzcut grade 8

Here we can see WWE and movie star John Cena with a grade 7 to 8 buzz cut.

This length is basically the shortest length your barber will go with the sissors before they do a true buzz. The reason we included it on this list is it gives you a place to start/test before going shorter.

This cut is very military, it’s a strong haircut, but I would recommend shorter if you have lost a lot of hair. In the early days of losing your hair this is a great option.

Grade 5 – 6 buzz cut

grade 6 buzzcut

This grade 5 – 6 buzz cut from Channing Tatum is the first real time that your length has gone.

At this stage there’s no styling, you hair just looks the way it looks. If you are thinning on top, this length will make everything look neater. Those thin dying hairs that look ugly and weak will be brought down to a managable length.

There’s nothing worse than seeing a man with thin dying hair yet he keeps it long and it kind of hangs like whispy thread. Everytime the wind blows he has to re-sweep it back into a comb over, this simply looks awful.

Grade 3 – 4 buzz cut

grade 3 - 4 buzzcut

This hair length shown to us by world boxing champion Anthony Joshua is the first true short – short length where it looks like an actual buzz cut. At this stage the thin areas start to blend in with the hair.

Having long hair with a bald patch looks silly. But having grade 3 hair blending into a bald patch is less of a contrast which makes it look great.

This length is a major step towards battling premature balding.

I assure you, once you get to this length you will never go back. It feels liberating and you’re finally able to relax and get on with your life.

Just make sure the sides are shorter than the top in order to give your head that correct shape.

Grade 1 – 2 buzz cut

mens shaved head styles

It’s strange to think, but the majority of the worlds best looking men have either this haircut or shorter.

Shown by Jeremy Meeks, the now model who’s mugshot went viral and had women swooning over him.

Also shown below by Freddie Ljungberg who once appeared as the face of Calvin Klein.

best hairstyle for receeding hairlines

If you have the confidence then this hairstyle is a must. Of course it helps to have the correct face shape, therefore I would recommend watching our documentary with Dr Mike Mew where we look at “Is modern life making us uglier?” and what you can do to improve your looks.

It’s a brave step to shave your hair to this point, but the bald patches and hair patches blend in perfectly without having that shiny head appearance.

It’s funny how there aren’t many positive images of men with thinning hair unless those hairstyles are grades 1 – 2, this is because those styles look fantastic and are celebrated by both men and women.

Your final stand.

If all else fails and you have barely any hair left, probabaly when you’re in your late 30’s/early 40’s then this is your best option.

The buzz cuts allow you to retain your youth for a little longer without living in denial.

But there will come a point where the razor blade will be the only solution.

At this stage hopefully the buzz cut lengths have prepared you and will it less painful to go through with.
